Laylatul Qadr, also known as the Night of Power, is the holiest night in Islam. It is believed to be the night when the Quran was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) through Angel Jibreel (Gabriel). The significance of this night is immense, as it is described in the Quran as “better than a thousand months” (Surah Al-Qadr 97:3).
Muslims around the world eagerly seek this night during the last ten nights of Ramadan, particularly on the odd nights (21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, or 29th). On this blessed night, decrees for the year are written, prayers are accepted, and sins are forgiven.
In this article, we will explore the blessings, importance, and best supplications (duas) for Laylatul Qadr, backed by authentic Quranic verses and Hadiths.
Laylatul Qadr, meaning “The Night of Decree” or “The Night of Power,” is one of the last ten nights of Ramadan. It is a mystical and divine night when Allah’s mercy, blessings, and forgiveness are at their peak.
Allah (SWT) dedicated an entire Surah (Chapter 97) in the Quran to highlight the importance of this night:
“Indeed, We sent the Qur’an down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.” (Surah Al-Qadr 97:1-5)
This means that worshipping on this single night is better than worshipping for over 83 years!
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) urged his followers to seek Laylatul Qadr during the last ten nights of Ramadan.
He said:
“Seek Laylatul Qadr in the last ten nights of Ramadan, in the odd-numbered nights.” (Bukhari & Muslim)
This is why Muslims increase their prayers, Quran recitation, and supplications during these nights.
Laylatul Qadr carries immeasurable rewards for those who spend the night in worship and devotion. Here are some of the greatest blessings of this holy night:
Allah grants the worship of one night the same reward as worshipping for a thousand months (83 years and 4 months).
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
“Whoever prays on Laylatul Qadr with faith and sincerity, all their past sins will be forgiven.” (Bukhari & Muslim)
This is a golden opportunity for repentance and seeking Allah’s mercy.
On Laylatul Qadr, angels descend to carry out Allah’s decrees. The Quran states:
“The angels and the Spirit (Jibreel) descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter.” (Surah Al-Qadr 97:4)
This means that on this night, Allah makes divine decisions for the coming year.
Laylatul Qadr brings tranquility, divine mercy, and spiritual enlightenment. Allah describes it as:
“Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.” (Surah Al-Qadr 97:5)
This signifies that peace, blessings, and divine forgiveness fill the entire night.
The best way to observe Laylatul Qadr is by offering voluntary night prayers (Tahajjud).
Since Allah revealed the Quran on this night, He highly recommends reading and pondering over its verses.
The Prophet (PBUH) taught us a special dua for Laylatul Qadr:
اللهم إنك عفو تحب العفو فاعف عني
Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun, tuhibbul-‘afwa, fa’fu ‘anni.
(O Allah, You are Most Forgiving, and You love forgiveness, so forgive me.) (Tirmidhi)
Repeating phrases like:
helps increase rewards on this special night.
“Our Lord! Do not hold us accountable if we forget or make a mistake.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:286)
“Our Lord, grant us mercy from Yourself and guide us to the right way in all matters.” (Surah Al-Kahf 18:10)
“Our Lord! Avert from us the punishment of Hell. Indeed, its punishment is everlasting.” (Surah Al-Furqan 25:65)
Laylatul Qadr is the most powerful night of the year, offering believers a chance to erase their sins, increase their faith, and secure eternal blessings. As the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised, we must seek it in the last ten nights of Ramadan and spend it in prayer, supplication, and remembrance of Allah.
May Allah grant us the opportunity to witness Laylatul Qadr and accept our prayers. Ameen!
